The biggest spenders on applications for the new domains were Google and Amazon, who between them racked up more than 100 submissions. Each application cost $185,000.
While many brands sought to protect their company identity, such as “.BBC”, “.Apple”, “.Nike” and “Guardian”, some of the submissions for more common nouns and adjectives could refer to new products, strategies, services or brand campaigns.

ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) announced a programme in 2008 to expand the number of domain names available to companies to increase the amount of domain space on the web.
Applications for the new top level domains closed on (31 May) and the initiative is expected to create up to 1,000 more domain names per year. ICANN released the full list of applicants on 13 June.
