BAA shifts rewards focus to Heathrow

Airport operator BAA is shifting the focus of its airport reward scheme to Heathrow which could see its WorldPOints scheme replaced by the Heathrow Rewards brand.

BAA currently operates WorldPoints, a scheme that allows customers to collect reward points for shopping at its Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports.

From 31 December 2012 customers will only be able to collect points at Heathrow.

The shift follows a Competition Commission ruling that has forced BAA to sell off a number of its airports in recent months.

BAA says that “at this stage there are no plans” to rename the WorldPoints Scheme but it has recently registered the trading names Heathrow Points and Heathrow Rewards under a number of related categories.

Rewards for the current scheme include airport shopping vouchers, car parking discounts and frequent flyer miles including Virgin, bmi, Avios and Lufthansa Miles.

Almost all (95 per cent) of WorldPoints activity already takes place at Heathrow, which has the highest retail sales of any airport worldwide. It reported sales of £1.7bn in 2011.
