Yahoo! unveils email overhaul

Yahoo! has unveiled an overhaul to its suite of email services in the first major product launch since ex-Googler Marissa Mayer joined as CEO in July.

Yahoo

The online giant has unveiled Yahoo! Mail for web with a less cluttered layout, improved search functions, thumbnail previews of attachments and a larger area to view incoming mail and compositions.

This has been accompanied by specific versions of Yahoo! Mail for Android, iOS and Windows 8 devices making it easier to scroll through, delete and compose emails and also with improved search functions.

Mayer announced the launch on her Yahoo! blog which reads: “You’ve told us loud and clear that you want fewer distractions when it comes to email…. And we’ve listened.

“We’ve also made your inbox more intuitive and easier to navigate, allowing you to focus on what matters most: your messages. And, because mobile is everything these days, Yahoo! Mail now has a consistent look and feel across devices.”

Mayer goes on to note that users of the webmail service will begin to see the changes over the next few days and plans to support the launch with ads across its network of online properties.

The launch comes just weeks after Mayer announced that mobile would be at the heart of turnaround strategy and conceded that Yahoo! has “underinvested” in mobile resulting in the “splintering” of the brand.

At the time she said: “Our top priority is a focused, coherent mobile strategy…it is clear that at some point in the future Yahoo! will have to be a predominantly mobile company.”
