Sky targets rivals’ customers with Free Thursdays

Sky is looking to poach customers of rival TV services by offering them the opportunity to sample its content for free every Thursday for 12 weeks.

Game of Thrones

The broadcaster has placed a cover wrap in this morning’s (24 January) Metro newspaper (see below) to raise awareness of the promotion, which starts today.

The ad points viewers towards the first set of programmes it will air free of charge, which includes Modern Family, Bradley Wiggins: A Year in Yellow, Elementary and Game of Thrones. They will air on Freeview Channel 11 – Pick TV – which is a wholly owned Sky channel.

Sky has a 37.5 per cent share of the UK TV market, according to Thinkbox data, which compiles figures from service providers’ official press releases and BARB data. About 41 per cent of TV viewing takes place on Freeview, 14 per cent on Virgin Media and 5 per cent on Freesat.

Yesterday (23 January) Sky secured extended TV highlights rights for all Premiership football matches to complement its extensive live coverage.

Earlier this week Sky launched a new subscription service, dubbed Sky Go Extra, which further bolsters its offering against rivals by allowing customers to download content from Sky Movies, Sky Atlantic and other channels to watch on their mobile devices without the need for an internet connection.
