Specsavers wades into Hazard ballboy row

Known for its quick response tactical ads, Specsavers has wasted no time in launching a press and online ad campaign following the incident between a Swansea ballboy and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

The ad features images of a ballboy and a football with a tick next to the ball and a red cross next to the ballboy. It mocks Hazard’s claims he mistook the Charlie Morgan for the ball when he allegedly kicked the boy instead. Underneath is the brand’s ‘Should’ve gone to Specsavers’ strapline.

Morgan appeared to refuse to let the ball go for a goal kick and after a tussle, Hazard is accused of kicking the boy in a bid to get the ball back.

Hazard, who was sent off following the incident, could also face police action. The Football Association is reviewing footage from the game.

Specsavers has a history of clever tactical marketing campaigns based on current events. Previous efforts include ads mocking the London 2012 Games organisers after the South Korean flag was displayed instead of the North Korean.

It also poked fun at a linesman for not seeing if the ball had crossed the goal line during England’s 1-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2012.
