Argos creates director role to accelerate shift to digital-first

Argos has appointed former Amazon exec Bertrand Bodson to the newly created position of digital director to steer its bid to be a digital-led retailer.

Argos is hoping former Amazon exec Bodson can help reinvent its digital offering.

Bodson will oversee of the company’s online and mobile offerings. He reports to managing director John Walden and is a member of the Argos Executive Board.

The retailer says the hire will help the brand “re-invent” its digital business.

It is hoped Bodson’s arrival can help Argos claw back lost market share in the face of growing pressure from online players such as Amazon. Argos is at the start of the four-year turnaround plan, unveiled last year, that will see it spend £100m annually to transform itself into a digital-led retailer. The company’s digital efforts to date are however, starting to have a positive impact after it revealed 2012 like-for-like sales grew 2.1 per cent.

Bodson joins the business from EMI Music where he was executive vice president for its global digital offering. Prior to that he established Amazon’s European DVD business, which was later merged into Lovefilm.
