The supermarket chain is poised to begin experimenting with mobile payment service Paddle in August or September, in a move designed to test the viability of the service both in its physical outlets and online.
Paddle is a mobile app that lets users speed up their purchases by scanning an image using their smartphone.
This then prompts a user to enter their three-digit security pass before completing the purchase, see video below.
The plan to launch the scheme was announced earlier in the year and Marks & Spencer’s Digital Lab unit is now in the process of finalising if the service will be a publicly-facing one and whether it will also be implemented in some of its retail stores.
However, if the pilot is successful in reducing basket abandonment rates and improving footfall in its early stages, then the trial will be rolled out further across the Marks & Spencer footprint.
