The all-rounder will appear in ads as well as offer betting tips on William Hill’s weekly podcast. The bookmaker is hoping the signing of Flintoff, who took part in two victorious series against Australia in his England career, will help exploit interest in the matches and encourage punters to use it to bet on the tests.

Kristof Fahy, chief marketing officer at William Hill, says: “I consider Freddie’s [Flintoff’s nickname] signing a huge coup. We are delighted he has joined us as we gear up for two Ashes series in six months.

“Make no mistake, he is an English icon who transcends the sport of cricket. When he talks, people listen – he is opinionated, deeply passionate about the game and instantly recognisable.”

Flintoff, who is the face of men’s fashion brand Jacamo and previously appeared in ads for supermarket Morrisons, joins former football star Robbie Savage and Grand National winner AP McCoy on William Hill’s books.

The Ashes starts at Trent Bridge on Wednesday (July 10).
