MailOnline loses global CMO Sean O’Neal

MailOnline’s global chief marketing officer Sean O’Neal is leaving the newspaper website after just a year at the company to become president of social ad tech company Adaptly.


O’Neal was hired by MailOnline owner DMGT to lead the newspaper website’s international expansion, particularly in the US where he was based. He was responsible for Mail Online’s worldwide marketing efforts and advertising product and audience development.

It is not yet known whether O’Neal will be directly replaced. DMGT did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

Details of O’Neal’s departure come on the same day (12 December) November’s ABC figures were published, which found the MailOnline achieved more than 10 million average daily unique browsers for the first time ever. It also attracted a record high 168 million monthly unique browsers, cementing its position as the most-visited English language newspaper website worldwide.

O’Neal joined MailOnline from Vizu, the online research company sold to Nielsen in July 2012, where he was president. Prior to that he held executive positions at Sony Online Entertainment, CD-Now and was a member of the founding team at digital marketing technology company Datran Media.

In his new role at Adaptly, O’Neal will lead the company’s international growth strategy and oversee the development of strategic partner relations. Adaptly is a Facebook Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer and Twitter Ads API partner.
