She replaces financial and business doyen Sir Paul Judge, who held the post for six years.
Matthew Neilson, NHS Scotland associate director of marketing and customer engagement for national services Scotland, joins the organisation as chair.
Ashmore’s role will focus on supporting the CIM’s wider outreach to professionals, businesses and the general public, and promote the importance of responsible marketing, personal development and high professional standards within organisations in the UK and overseas.
She has previously held senior marketing positions at organisations including Yell, Procter and Gamble and Mars where she was global chief marketing capability officer. She was appointed as energy company SSE’s first CMO in July last year.
She says: “I am excited to take on the role of president at a really important period for CIM as it delivers its three-year strategy, and at a time when the marketing industry is going through great changes in areas such as data and analytics, sustainability and social responsibility.”
Neilson is a former senior global sustainability manager at Unilever.
The CIM has been reviewing its operations and refreshing its priorities under chief executive Anne Godfrey. It has just given its backing to the Government’s Growth Vouchers programme designed to help Small and Medium Enterprises with funding to gain advice on marketing, leadership and other topics.
