He will start his new role at GM’s Detroit headquarters at the beginning of March. Vauxhall says it will announce a new chief “in due course”.

In a statement, Vauxhall says: “Duncan has led Vauxhall out of the global recession into a vibrant company, launching over a dozen new models and new brand strategy in just three years.”

Aldred has been managing director at Vauxhall since 2010, adding the role of chairman in 2011 and taking on job of acting vice-president of sales, marketing and aftersales at Opel/Vauxhall in January last year. He joined the car marque in 1990, working in various positions in marketing and sales in the UK, Germany and Hungary.

Vauxhall is the second largest car marque in the UK, selling almost 260,000 new cars last year according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

It has ramped up its marketing activities in recent months, launching a new loyalty programme and replacing Chevrolet as Liverpool football club’s official automotive partner. It also sponsors the England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales national teams.
