Ofgem launches push to encourage Brits to go ‘energy shopping’

Energy regulator Ofgem is launching a PR and digital push to encourage consumers to go “energy shopping” in order to find a better deal on their gas and electricity.

The campaign comes in the same month Ofgem outlined new proposals to make switching energy companies “faster and more reliable”, rules it expects will come into force by August.

Those proposals form part of a swathe of reforms suggested by the watchdog, which it says will create a simpler and clearer energy market for consumers.

Ofgem has created an online guide – www.goenergyshopping.co.uk – as part of the campaign that provides consumers with information about how to check existing energy deals so they can get a better tariff.

The regulator will look to create awareness of the website via social media channels and PR activity featuring the campaign’s spokeswoman TV presenter Konnie Huq.

To support the campaign, Ofgem also commissioned a poll of more than 5,000 UK adults, conducted by ICM, that found almost half (43 per cent) of Britons do not prioritise energy comparison to find the best deal – yet 16 per cent of people believe they spend more than they would do on energy than if they shopped around, ahead of their weekly groceries, gifts and broadband.
