News UK names new CMO after Vanneck-Smith moves to Dow Jones

News UK has promoted customer sales director Chris Duncan to chief marketing officer after moving Katie Vanneck-Smith to lead marketing for sister brand Dow Jones globally.


Duncan will oversee marketing for The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun as well as digital paid content sub brands Times+ and Sun+ from September.

It appears Duncan has been appointed for his inisight and CRM experience as the publisher looks to maximise its engaged audiences.In his current role he is responsible for direct sales channels and growing revenue from print and digital subscriptions. He  is said to have led development of the publisher’s customer management, data and its paid content strategy.      

Prior to News UK, he was managing director of customer value management firms Infoloop and Alchemetrics.  

Vanneck- Smith will oversee Dow Jones’ marketing and customer relationships globally as well as having P&L responsibility for Dow Jones outside the US.

Vanneck-Smith, one of Marketing Week’s Vision 100 , was appointed CMO in 2010. She is credited with developing Times+and Sun+. She was promoted to CMO after several senior roles at the publisher including  marketing and sales director at The Times. Prior to what was then News International, she was marketing director of The Daily Telegraph.

She is taking part in the The Marketing Academy’s Fellowship designed  to help marketers become CEOs.
