Google opens first bricks-and-mortar shop in the UK

Google opened its first physical store today (11 March) which will host all of the brand’s devices, as it looks to compete with rivals Microsoft and Apple.

The ‘Google Shop’ has opened in Currys PC World on Tottenham Court Road in London and offers customers the chance to sample Google’s range of devices including Android phones, tablets and laptops.

The shop will also provide customers tutorials to help inform them about how its various devices work together. Classes will also be tailored to children, teachers and those worried about security.

James Elias, Google’s director of consumer marketing says: “We want to offer people a place where they can play, experiment and learn about all of what Google has to offer; from a range of devices to a totally-connected, seamless online life.”

Visitors will have the chance to play with a range of Google’s tools and apps in store. A surround screen installation will allow consumers to ‘fly’ through Google Earth.

In addition, a ‘Doodle Wall’ will allow customers to use digital spray cans to paint their own take on Google’s logo, which they can then share on social media.

Two separate stores will be opened later in the year in Currys’ Fulham and Thurrock branches.

Google joins a host of brands opening a ‘shop within a shop’ including Ebay and Argos. The technology company also joins tech brands Apple and Microsoft in creating an immersive physical store, which allows consumers to interact with devices.
