Dior, Marmite, Coca-Cola: The top 10 YouTube ads in September

This month’s most popular YouTube ads feature Natalie Portman jumping into the sea in the name of love and Coca-Cola showing off its sustainability efforts.

1. Christian Dior – Miss Dior: The New Eau de Parfum

It turns out a lot of people enjoy watching actress Natalie Portman perform a variety of dramatic activities, like dangerously jumping off a pier into the sea wearing a designer dress.

The cinematic ad, which was filmed to promote Dior’s new ‘Miss Dior’ perfume, closely shadows the actress and asks viewers what they would do for love. I don’t know about you, but it certainly isn’t doing donuts while driving a hot pink car with my terrified friends in the back. No matter – the ad racked up an impressive 39 million views.

2. Marmite – The Marmite Gene Project: Test Results

It’s a saying as old as time itself – you either love or hate Marmite. But in a new ad, the Unilever-owned spread decided to explore whether people were born this way by taking a ‘gene test’.

The humorous ad shows explosive results, with some families coming together and rifts breaking out. Viewers are also encouraged to find out whether they have the ‘Marmite gene’ by ordering a test kit online.

3. Domino’s Pizza – The Official Food of Squads

There is still a debate as to who brought the term ‘squad’ into popular culture. Some say this is Taylor Swift’s handiwork, but Domino’s Pizza also decided to adopt the term in its latest campaign. While Swift might have used the term to show off her collection of supermodel friends, Domino’s is using it to promote the fact its food is the “official” food of tight friendship groups.

One of the squads is put on show in the clip, featuring some interesting clothing, fidget spinners and a young man wearing glasses on top of glasses – it surely can’t get cooler than that.

4. Coca-Cola – A Bottle Love Story

Drinks companies are finding themselves under increasing pressure to tackle the ‘plastic problem’, as their plastic bottles litter the world’s cities, oceans and waterways. Coca-Cola decided to run its first major sustainability campaign in response, encouraging consumers to recycle its bottles.

The ‘Love Story’ campaign, created by Ogilvy and Mather Berlin, tells the story of two bottles – one Fanta and the other Coke Zero Sugar – who fall in love as they meet over and over again because they keep getting recycled into new bottles. The film ends with a voiceover encouraging people to recycle bottles from Coca-Cola brands including Sprite, Fanta and Coke after use.

He-Man and his nemesis Skeletor have returned once again in MoneySuperMarket’s latest ad, this time taking on Dirty Dancing’s final dancing scene with – of course – the iconic lift. The ad decided not to include the practice jumps done in the lake, however.

For those who can’t get enough, there is also an extended two minute version – which so far has been watched by almost 100,000 people.
