£2m Glenfiddich task up for pitch

William Grant & Sons has put the £2.5m creative account for its Glenfiddich whisky brand up for pitch, less than two years after appointing McCann-Erickson to the business.

William Grant & Sons has put the &£2.5m creative account for its Glenfiddich whisky brand up for pitch, less than two years after appointing McCann-Erickson to the business.

The move follows the ousting of the company’s group managing director Patrick Thomas, who left following a board-level shake-up earlier this year (MW May 22).

Thomas was the first non-family member to take the role at the family business. As part of the restructure, Wm Grant decided to strip out a layer of management and it is believed that Thomas disagreed with the move.

McCann held the advertising business for the Scotch whisky brand for 27 years until June 1999, when BMP DDB was appointed following a pitch against Publicis, Saatchi & Saatchi and Partners BDDH (MW July 1, 1999). McCann was reappointed to the Glenfiddich business a year later (MW December 13, 2001).

Last year the whisky distiller appointed Universal McCann to its global strategic media planning account. The agency beat OMD following a protracted pitch (MW September 19, 2002). John Ayling & Associates handles media planning and buying in the UK.
