Airmiles dials up mobile recycling scheme

Travel reward scheme Airmiles has launched a mobile phone recycling programme that allows members to collect miles by sending in old handsets.

Members can calculate the miles they will collect from their mobile phone on a dedicated area on the Airmiles website. They can then send in their handsets to collect up to 750 Airmiles.

The scheme is being managed in partnership with ShP Limited, an e-waste recycling company. All the phones received will be safely and securely reconditioned and all profits from the recycling programme will be re-invested into environmental projects.

Director of relationship marketing and insight at Airmiles Andrea Burchett says: “We know that Airmiles’ members want to boost their miles balance in ways that fit into their lifestyles and match their values.”

The ownership structure of Airmiles changed earlier this year so that the scheme is now operated by The Mileage Company, although ultimately owned by British Airways.
