It was abolished in 1994 to form the Arts Council of England, the Arts Council off Wales and the Scottish Arts Council. It supports a wide range of artistic activities, including theatre, music, literature, dance and photography.

Between 2008 and 2011, it will invest £1.3bn of public money from the Government and a further £0.3bn from the National Lottery into artistic experiences for consumers.
