Asda has launched a moneysaving tips Youtube channel to emphasise the retailer’s value credentials.

The channel, called Saving You Money TV, features customer generated tips plus short films produced by the supermarket “to help people save money.”

It will also act as a medium for the supermarket to demonstrate how it achieves its own cost savings to deliver low prices in its stores. The supermarket recently announced it was cutting prices across a further 5000 product lines by Easter, following 7500 reductions in January.

The initiative follows Tesco’s recent move to wind down its Tesco TV, later rebranded to Tesco Screens in-store TV network, apparently due to old, tired and energy inefficient equipment.

The network had been designed to act as a revenue stream as it sold third party advertising, but it is not thought to have hit profit targets. Tesco says it is now developing “modern and energy-efficient alternative communication solutions” throughout its 2000 UK stores.

Meanwhile, Asda chief marketing officer Rick Bendel says the supermarket has hired a mobile TV crew to get comments from customers and “people in the street and at home”, and has a team seeking the best advice from the internet to feature on the supermarket’s new channel.
