Asda posts 12th quarterly sales rise

Asda has posted its 12th successive quarterly growth, with a 6.4% rise in like-for-like sales excluding fuel in the 12 weeks to April 19.

According to the UK’s second largest supermarket chain, the figure rises to 8.4% when adjusted for exceptional items such as the timing of Easter.

The company says food sales were strongest, driven by a return to “cooking from scratch” to save cash in a recession.

Recipe ideas for meals such as Salmon Pie that will “feed a family of four for £4” will be launched in-store later this month in response to the trend.

The Walmart-owned supermarket chain points to its 40 base points in market share gain in clothing according to TNS figures in today’s (May 14) results statement, but does not reveal sales figures.

Walmart recently elevated Asda chief marketing officer Rick Bendel to International CMO, responsible for all 14 Walmart territories outside of the US.
