Chambers joins the firm immediately and will report into Audi director Jeremy Hicks.

Chambers will take responsibility for Audi’s communications strategy and will focus on how customers experience and interact with the brand, the car marque says.

The role has been handled by brand consultant Philip Olden on an interim basis since former marketing director Peter Duffy stepped down in December.

Duffy joined easyJet as the budget airline’s first marketing director.

The car marque says Chambers’ experience in the technology sector is well suited to its history of technological innovation.

Audi plans to invest €11.6bn (£10.4bn) in new products between 2011 and 2015 and is aims to grow its portfolio of models from 35 to 42. It will launch the R8 e-tron – its first fully electric model – in late 2012.

Hicks says: “We have taken great care in making this crucial appointment that will take us into the next key phase of our development as a brand and an organisation.”

Audi recorded a 19% increase in vehicle sales in June to 117,650.
