Barnardo’s to lose its head of marketing

Children’s charity Barnardo’s is looking for a director of marketing and communications, following Charles Holden’s announcement that he is leaving.

Holden has been appointed as chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, after seven years at the UK’s 11th largest charity (1995 figures).

Since joining Barnardo’s, Holden has restructured marketing, fund-raising, communications and retail operations as part of a major review of the charity’s operation.

“I feel that it is the right time to hand over the reins. We have built an outstandingly strong team in marketing and communications… and I am confident that they will achieve the success which we have been building for the past few years,” says Holden.

Barnardo’s has an annual expenditure of about 100m, 1.5m of which is being spent this year on advertising through Ogilvy & Mather (MW March 21).

The agency was appointed to update Barnardo’s “Victorian orphanage” image – Barnardo’s has not run orphanages for many years.

O&M replaced Maher Bird Associates as the incumbent agency on the account.
