BBC Worldwide closes Good Homes magazine

BBC Worldwide is shutting its eleven-year old Good Homes monthly magazine, according to reports.

The title lost 20% of its readers in the last ABC audit for the six months to December 2008 compared to the same period in 2007, meaning it dropped out of the home interest top ten titles.

The title’s 97,725 circulation remained above home improvement sector rivals such as Bauer’s Elle Decoration. Other titles in the sector also lost circulation reflecting the cutback on home improvements caused by the credit crunch.

National Magazine Company’s House Beautiful, number three in the market, lost 8% of readers to record a circulation of 161,102 while IPC’s market leader Ideal Home slipped 7.9% to 197,516 copies.

The eleven-year old title will close after its July edition, and staff were put on notice today.

The commercial arm of the public service media company recently said it was reviewing its operations as concerns were raised by a group of MPs about how its money-making activities impact on the BBC’s reputation.
