Booth Lockett Makin is understood to have won the &£6m Blockbuster video account from CIA Medianetwork in the UK.

The move comes as Blockbuster takes a more aggressive stance in the UK by developing its digital video disk (DVD) service and moving further into new media and electronic commerce. The company has 660 stores in the UK.

Blockbuster will roll out the DVD format players and software titles to its 3,800 stores across the US and to its 1,000 retail locations overseas.

The company is also testing the market for PC software rental in selected stores around the UK.

Last month, Blockbuster chairman and chief executive John Antioco said: “Now that DVD is going mainstream we want it in all our stores so that the product is easily available to the public.”

Blockbuster is also strengthening its e-commerce operation and is planning to sell videos and DVDs through its Website.

Blockbuster was formerly wholly-owned by Viacom, which last month merged with CBS.

The company partially floated earlier this year and Viacom retains a stake.

Blockbuster is now the largest video rental chain in the world.
