State-owned Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that it is axing 2,600 jobs across the UK. At least 2,000 roles will go in the bank’s insurance arm – which controls Churchill and Direct Line. Another 600 are expected to go at the head office of its high street retail banking business.
RBS Insurance has restructured its senior marketing team, reverting to a brand-led structure just two years after axing it in favour of group roles. Royal Bank of Scotland chief executive Sir Fred Goodwin has resigned as the Government agrees to inject 20bn of new capital into the bank in an effort to stabilise the markets. A further 17bn of taxpayers cash will be injected into HBOS and Lloyds TSB.
