Calling time on drinking culture

With reference to the article “Fear and loathing in Kent” (MW August 11), I write to say that I am appalled to read yet another sarcastic piece about people attempting to retain the heritage and culture of our country and failing to list any of the important and relevant facts.

If Iain Murray had bothered to look further than how much a pint was going to cost “Mr Joe Public” he might have found that the main reason for protesting against the proposals for Tunbridge Wells opera house is that to do so will mean completely destroying all the original features and character of this listed building’s interior.

Even though it is being used as a bingo hall, I would like the J D Wetherspoon group to confirm it wouldn’t turn the place into another hanging basket display with gaudy decor.

If we are really unlucky, it may even suspend a model of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz from the ceiling as it has done in its Moon & Stars pub in Penge, South-east London. If this isn’t a feature, it is a strange item to use as decor. Or maybe old Dorothy is just “high” on the fact she only paid 99p for a pint.
