Capital extends lead over commercial rivals in London

95.8 Capital FM has extended its lead over rivals in the fiercely competitive London commercial radio market, registering its best listening figures for seven years in the final quarter of 2011, according to the latest listenership figures.

The Global Radio station registered 2.25 million listeners in the three months to 31 December, according to Rajar, up 3.4% on the previous quarter and 14.9% on the same period last year.

Performance was boosted by month-on-month and year-on-year gains for its flagship breakfast show as Johnny Vaughan takes his Rajar bow. , Vaughan who was replaced by Dave Berry last month, and co-presenter Lisa Snowdon posted 1.3 million listeners, up from 1.13 million in the previous quarter and 1.08 million a year earlier.

Bauer’s Magic 105.4 solidified second spot among the capital’s commercial stations with 2.16 million listeners, up 8.7% on the previous quarter and 5.7% on last year.

Global’s Heart fell back after third quarter gains, down 4.7% on quarter three but remaining in third spot. It did, however, register a 9.3% gain on the final quarter of 2010.

Sister station KISS FM bounced back after a disappointing third quarter, registering 1.87 million listeners, up 10% on the previous quarter and 2.9% on the year.
