FMCG crowned the best paid sector for marketers

FMCG emerges as the highest paying sector for marketers, according to Marketing Week’s 2020 Career and Salary Survey, with education, construction and the charity sector bringing up the rear.

The analysis of pay across 24 different sectors found that FMCG is on average the best paid sector for marketing, with a mean salary of £63,916. It is followed by gaming and gambling, and health and pharmaceuticals.

At the bottom of the ranking, meanwhile, is education, with an average marketing salary of £44,424. This is followed by the construction and property sector, and the charity/not-for-profit sector.

The salary survey data also shows the span of average marketing salaries as people progress through their careers. Pay runs from an average of £26,599 for a marketing executive to £98,852 for a director/vice-president of marketing.

The analysis highlights the big disparities in average pay between sectors like FMCG and education, as well as the gender bias that exists the higher you climb up the marketing career ladder.

*Average salaries are calculated from full-time (35+ hours a week) respondents providing their basic annual salary, excluding any additional benefits. This is based on a total survey sample of 3,883 respondents, 83% of which are based in the UK.
