Carlton Online unveils movie site

Carlton Online, the interactive division of the Carlton media group, this week launches movie site Popcorn.co.uk – the second of three consumer site launches planned for roll-out before Christmas.

The advertising-supported site, featuring searchable listings of cinema screenings nationwide plus a movie gossip area, will be backed by a cinema advertising campaign breaking later this month. A “substantial” online marketing campaign is also planned.

The site is produced by Sam Michel, formerly head of online strategy at Webmedia. Carlton Online plans to sell videos and books through the site once e-commerce partnerships are signed.

The unveiling of the site follows last week’s launch of Carlton Online’s Jamba games site (jamba.co.uk). The company is also planning to unveil a third site in early December, targeting a major, though so far unspecified, area of consumer interest.

According to Carol Dukes, managing director of Carlton Online: “The movie industry runs right through the Carlton group, so it was natural for us to choose this area for our first major Website launch.”

Among Carlton’s other film-related interests are Carlton Screen Advertising and Carlton Cinema Channel, the movie channel which will be carried on the Carlton-backed digital TV service ONdigital.
