Clear Channel appoints international chief

Clear Channel has appointed William Eccleshare as president and chief executive of its international division.

Eccleshare joins the outdoor media owner from his role as CEO and chairman of global advertising agency network BBDO Europe. He has also previously been chairman and CEO of ad agency Young & Rubicam

He will be responsible for all Clear Channel’s businesses in the newly created role outside of the US and will report to chief executive Mark Mays

Mays says Eccleshare has been appointed to help the company achieve its “efforts to expand internationally.”

Recent reports have speculated the company may opt to sell its international businesses following its reporting of a net loss of $418m in the first quarter of 2009/10, from an $800m profit last year.

The company currently has offices in 50 countries. It has recently come under fire from anti-racism campaigners for its deal with far right party BNP to carry its controversial European election campaign posters.
