Debenhams to boost designer ranges amid falling sales

Debenhams plans to increase the amount of own bought stock it sells such as Designers at Debenhams ranges, the department store chain reports this morning.

Debenhams plans to increase the amount of “own bought” stock it sells such as “Designers at Debenhams” ranges, the department store chain reports this morning.

The company says it’s Designer ranges, which include collections by Julien MacDonald and Betty Jackson, are growing against a general trend of falling sales.

The chain, which recently bought the stock and temporary brand licence for Principles from administrators, reported its sales dipped by 3.6% in the six months to the end of February, compared to the same period last year.

It adds it is continuing to take market share from the likes of Next and Marks & Spencer in a first half trading update released this morning (March 17).

However, its shares fell this morning as the City reacted to reports the retailer’s largest shareholders failed to persuade banks to write off hundreds of millions of pounds of its debt against fresh shareholder cash.
