Diesel sales down as car market struggles

Sales of diesel cars in the UK have fallen for the first time since April as the car market continues to struggle.

The latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that diesel sales for November were down 2.5% on the same period last year. Overall sales for 2006 are down more than 3% but the SMMT points out that sales are down just 0.7% in the last three months, and says the industry is on target to meet its full-year forecast.

Sales of 4x4s are down by almost 10,000 vehicles on 2005 as consumers turn to more environmentally friendly vehicles.

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan says: “There is no doubt that environmental factors are rising up the agenda for new car buyers. Lower fuel consumptions and emissions are now as important for many people as safety features and price.”
