Digital Britain report highlights issues within government

Lord Stephen Carter, minister of communications, technology and broadcasting, today admitted the interim Digital Britain report showed a need for more work on the areas of digital government and skills.

Speaking at an event organised by Nesta (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) Lord Carter said government needs a radical review of its approach to digital literacy.

Carter said the government has commissioned further work by e-skills and Skillset to look at where the skills gap lie.

“When you’re doing what I’m doing, you are inevitably treading on a lot of department’s toes,” added Carter.

The comments follow the launch of the interim report in January, which included a range of proposals such as greater legislation to force ISPs to counter piracy and upgrades to services and infrastructure.
