This Google-backed venture sells genetics tests direct to consumers, so they can discover information about their inherited characteristics, but also their risk of developing diseases such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anaemia.

People pay £125, send off a saliva sample and get their results in six to eight weeks. The venture, founded in the US in 2006 by Linda Avey, Paul Cusenza and its CEO Anne Wojcicki, launched tests in the UK at the end of 2014 and it claims to have more than one million customers around the world.

The company’s latest round of funding raised $115m (£79.6m), valuing it at around $1.1bn (£760m), according to a Bloomberg report in October 2015.

It partnered with Apple in April 2016 to incorporate people’s genetic information into ResearchKit, Apple’s tool used by market researchers to find iOS users to participate in studies. For example, a healthcare provider could develop an app to track the symptoms of a particular disease and incorporate genetic information to see what might trigger it.
