CommuterClub

CommuterClub allows people using Transport for London services to access the savings of an annual Travelcard by paying for the ticket via a monthly direct debit, plus a small fee. What’s the benefit? CommuterClub buys in bulk so can get the yearly travel passes cheaper and people effectively pay for 11 months’ travel instead of 12.

An angel investment round raised £500,000 in 2014, and a second in 2015 raised £750,000, with investors including tennis player Andy Murray. The founders Petko Plachkov and Imran Gulamhuseinwala have also partnered with RateSetter to cover the cost of tickets upfront.

They came up with the idea after sending a Freedom of Information request to TfL and discovered that fewer than 10% of the two and a half million people commuting to and from London use long-term season tickets. It also works with businesses to provide travel for staff.
