Earny is an automated personal assistant that does the legwork for you, collecting all your spending details and trying to find out if you could have found a purchase cheaper elsewhere.

Using the price protection policies that stores and credit card companies offer, Earny claims the difference back on your behalf and the company takes a 25% cut of the proceeds. It already covers a wide range of US-based retailers such as Walmart, J Crew, Gap, Costco and Target.

The California-based company raised $2.5m (£1.9m) in seed funding in 2016 and the LA Times quoted CEO Oded Vakrat’s surprise that the retailers are on-board with the service: “We thought they would hate us but they understood the potential of giving confidence to customers.”
