Faarm

Faarm is a Portuguese startup developing technology to improve access to food traceability information. Its creation was as a direct result of the so-called ‘Brazilian meat scandal’ when the world’s largest exporter of red meat was discovered to have been subject to a number of corruption schemes between meat companies and health inspectors. As a result, Brazilian meat is under embargo in Europe and China.

Food provenance, quality and safety is a hot topic, with other regions suffering similar problems in the supply chain, notably across Europe in the 2013 horse meat scandal, where a number of red meat products were found to contain horse meat. Major retailers were found to lack procedures to trace the origin of the meat sold on their shelves.

Faarm’s first product, Muuu, is a livestock management platform for the beef industry. Cloud-based, it is free for producers and beef associations to consult and upload their cattle data. In March 2017, the organisation announced pre-seed investment from Caixa Capital totalling €100,000 (£86,582).
