Gartner forecasts that 6.4 billion connected devices will be in use worldwide in 2016, up 30% from 2015, and the total will reach 20.8 billion by 2020. Step up Oomi, a smart home system that enables users to control and monitor their home’s lighting, ambience, air quality, security and entertainment streaming from a tablet, the Oomi Touch.
The product utilises near field communication technology and – unlike many cloud-based systems – does not need an internet connection to work.
The technology is also designed to make it easy to add other home-based devices. The product was developed by Shenzhen-based technology company Fantem, founded by engineer Winston Cheng, former vice-president of Aeon Labs.
Oomi is privately funded and debuted on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in May 2015, raising $1m (£700,000) in just 22 days, and $1.8m (£1.2m) in total. The product received an Innovation Award at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show.
