EBay and Insurancewide.com team up for car price comparison service

EBay is partnering with Insurancewide.com to provide a price comparison service on the online auction house’s eBayMotors.co.uk pages. The eBayMotors community, the UK’s busiest online showroom, will have access to Insurancewide.com’s service, which offers a “comprehensive” choice of car insurance options.

The tie-up comes in the week that the Financial Services Authority (FSA) launches an investigation into the fast-growing comparison site market, in response to renewed calls from the insurance industry for the FSA to begin regulating the sector.

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba) this week raised questions about protection for consumers who use comparison sites, saying its research shows people do not fully understand the difference between the policies they are comparing. Such sites are believed to account for as much as 50% of motor insurance policy sales in the UK.

Jody Ford, head of eBayMotors.co.uk, says the tie-up with Insurancewide.com gives its 3 million monthly visitors the “right level of choice, service and value” to address their insurance needs.

Insurancewide.com chief executive James Harrison says it is a natural step for eBay to be able to offer customers insurance information. The web comparison site, which launched in 1999, already has partnerships in place with personal finance portals including MSN, AOL and Yahoo!
