eBay gives European reins to France chief Schirmeister

Online auction company eBay has promoted Alex von Schirmeister to the role of European marketing director.

Currently head of eBay in France, he replaces Torsten Schuppe, who is leaving the company to join Google to become its first dedicated marketing director for the UK and Ireland.

Von Schirmeister will be based in Zurich, Switzerland and will report to Wendy Jones, eBay vicepresident of marketing for operations and advertising.

Von Schirmeister first joined eBay in 2004 as marketing director for eBay in France, before moving up to the role of country head in 2007.

Before joining eBay, von Schirmeister worked for Telefonica Moviles in Madrid. In 2000, he cofounded a start-up company in the mobile commerce sector in the UK, after having spent two years at Booz & Co.
