EDF Energy has appointed Havas-owned Media Planning Group to handle its £6m media planning and buying account. It is not clear if the energy company held a competitive pitch. Manning Gottlieb OMD was incumbent on the account.

In April last year, EDF kicked off a statutory review of its £5m advertising account, which is handled by Maher Bird, but this is now on hold.

EDF Energy, which has over 5 million customers in the UK, says it will increase its emphasis on UK marketing and claims that its UK customer base is expanding rapidly. MPG’s first task involves handling an extensive cross-media campaign.

In a separate move, EDF has signed up as a sponsor of ITV’s Rugby World Cup coverage along with car brand Peugeot. The two brands will share sponsorship of the TV coverage as well as online and interactive sponsorship.
