ES ad director follows md out

Evening Standard advertising director Mike Orlov has been replaced by former CIA UK managing director Alan Brydon.

Orlov is the latest casualty of the new regime at the struggling Associated newspapers title. His departure follows the sudden exit last month of long-standing managing director Sally de la Bedoyore, who was replaced by Metro managing director Mike Anderson.

Brydon left CIA UK in January 2000 without a job to go to (MW January 13, 2000). Anderson is a former marketing director of CIA Medianetwork, who left to join New PHD in August 1997 before moving on to Metro.

Media buyers have speculated since Anderson’s arrival at the Standard that his brief is to align the Metro and Standard brands and to merge the two newspapers’ sales divisions.

The shake-up began at the Standard with the appointment of Veronica Wadley as editor in February, replacing Max Hastings. Last month, the newspaper relaunched its Hot Tickets supplement under the name Metro Life.

The newspaper’s average net circulation for August stood at 388,894, down 3.05 per cent on July. The average net circulation for the period from March to August 2002 was 412,238, down 2.27 per cent on the same period last year.

Orlov joined the Evening Standard in April 2000 from the post of deputy ad director at The Mail on Sunday. He joined Associated Newspapers in 1994.
