Esso defends its partnering record

We’re dismayed that the article “Choose your partners wisely” (MW June 29) suggests that Esso is socially irresponsible.

Within the energy industry we believe we are a leader in social responsibility. Our 2005 Corporate Citizenship Report (www.exxonmobil. com) details our achievements in areas as diverse as health and safety, greenhouse gas emissions management, workplace flexibility, women’s education in developing nations, and recycling measures.

As for “partnerships”, we have a long history with many charitable organisations, for example Community Service Volunteers, National Energy Action and Energy Action Scotland. We are ready, willing and able to be judged on our social and environmental actions and performance.
