Facebook denies mobile phone plans

Facebook has denied speculation that it’s developing its own-branded mobile handset and operating system.

Rumours emerged over the weekend after bloggers had posted that two high-level employees were working on the project, adding that Facebook has already partnered with a third-party handset manufacturer.

However, a Facebook statement has denied the rumours, claiming the reports were an exaggeration of its existing mobile projects.

Jaime Schopflin, a spokeswoman for Facebook, told tech website Mashable, “The bottom line is that whenever we work on a deep integration, people want to call it a Facebook phone because that’s such an attractive soundbite, but building phones is just not what we do.”

She went on to say that Facebook was currently working on an HTML5 version of the site and mobile apps on major platforms.

Facebook indexes highly on mobile internet use, with the site the most popular on mobile in the UK with 2.75bn unique views in March, according to the GSMA and ComScore’s Mobile Media Metrics study.
