Former M&S retail chief to head Asdas George

Asda has appointed former Marks and Spencer retail director Anthony Thompson as managing director of clothing brand George. Thompson, who will join on September 17, will also be appointed to the executive board.

He takes over the role from Angela Spindler, who stepped down earlier this year for family reasons. Thompson joins as the brand is expanded into homeware and furniture for the first time.

In his role at M&S, Thompson was responsible for introducing the management of Marks and Spencer stores by format, including Simply Food, flagship and retail parks. Prior to that role he headed up the high street retailer’s childrenswear unit.

Asda chief executive Andy Bond says Thompson is an “experienced clothing expert, has a real passion and enthusiasm for the brand, and proven leadership skills.”

George was launched 16 years ago and has become one of Asda’s biggest success stories. The business is now worth £2bn and parent company Wal-Mart sells the clothing line through its stores in eight countries.
