Simon Bernstein, the top marketer at Friends of the Earth, is leaving to join direct marketing agency Target Direct.
Bernstein held the position for five years and was the environmental pressure group’s first communications and fundraising director. He joins Target as senior consultant, where, from September, he will be in charge of developing a strategic consultancy for the agency’s clients.
Bernstein, who headed a team of 35, has been instrumental in producing the charity’s first marketing and fundraising strategy. Earlier this year he appointed Partners BDDH to create a £1m marketing push urging the Government to improve the UK’s rail system (MW January 31). He also oversaw a revamp of the charity by branding specialist Lambie-Nairn and last year dropped WWAV Rapp Collins, in order to focus on more integrated campaigns.
Friends of the Earth claims to be the largest international network of environmental groups in the world and is represented in 68 countries. It has been involved with Stop Esso alongside Greenpeace and People Planet. Last week, the campaign took a new twist after Esso announced plans to take legal action against Greenpeace in France over the “Stop Esso” logo. The petrol company claims that logo implies links with the Nazi SS.
