Global Radio appoints commercial chief

Global Radio has appointed Mike Gordon, former News Group Newspapers deputy managing director, as its commercial chief. The role was created as part of the radio operator’s £375m merger with GCap Media.

Gordon, who left NGN earlier this year, will take over as group commercial director on December 1, reporting to incoming chief executive Stephen Miron, the former managing director of†Associated Newspapers-owned Mail on Sunday and Mail Online. Miron also starts on December 1.

The new position aims to bring together Global’s national and local commercial teams under one single management structure. Gordon will oversee five agency sales teams, one client sales team and one interactive sales team.

He will take over from chief operating officer Don Thomson, who has been handling the role on a temporary basis. Global created the role as part of the merger of its sales structure, which is due to be complete by November 1. It is making about 80 people redundant as part of the changes.

Gordon joined News International in 2004 and held a variety of roles including commercial director of Times Newspapers and director of News Group Newspapers becoming becoming deputy managing director. Prior to that, he was managing director of Virtual Internet, an internet business solutions provider.

A number of industry figures had been linked to the role including Mark Chippendale, former News Group media director. Chippendale is thought to have held a number of discussions with the radio operator earlier this year. He left News Group Newspapers earlier this year and is a former colleague of Gordon (MW October 8).
