Google is in negotiations to buy Twitter, according to reports from the US last night.

The ‘late stage’ negotiations to acquire the micro-blogging service come as its user numbers top 55m a day.

In 2008 Facebook was reported to be in talks with Twitter, but nothing came of the discussions.

Twitter, which lets people post messages of 140 characters, is reportedly valued at $250m (£170m).
