Google upgrades YouTube mobile service

Google has revamped its YouTube mobile site by improving its touchscreen and HTML5 functionality as playbacks pass 100m a day.

The updated site will more closely resemble YouTube.com, including search suggestions and the ability to create playlists.

In a post on the Google mobile blog, product manager Andrey Doronichev said, “As we make improvements to Youtube.com, you’ll see them quickly follow on our mobile site, unlike native apps which aren’t updated as frequently.”

The improvements also include improved touchscreen functionality and the updated version of the site can be accessed through a mobile web browser, according to the post.

The number of YouTube playbacks from mobile devices rose 160% between 2008 and 2009. Google is now handling more than 100m playbacks a day.

“This is roughly the number of daily playbacks that YouTube.com was streaming when we joined forces with Google in 2006,” said Doronichev.
