Homeless World Cup seeks sponsors

The Homeless World Cup, the street football tournament that raises money for homeless projects, is seeking sponsors to support this year’s event. The fifth annual cup will take place in Denmark in late July.

The event, which is already supported by Nike and UEFA, gives homeless people around the world the opportunity to represent their country. This year will see 48 countries take part.

It is using its website to appeal to companies around the world to pledge at least £500 to help poor countries to send teams to the tournament. Brands can also †take up the role of international partner status.

The event was launched by Mel Young, the co-founder The Big Issue Scotland, and Harald Schmeid, the editor of Austrian street paper Megaphon, in 2003. The tournament will move to Melbourne in 2008, Europe in 2009 and South America in 2010.
